Orchestrating a Celestial Brand Shift

The Planet z
Starter Pack

The Planet Z relaunch was built to capture the Day 1 drummer. My mission was to take a standard entry-level starter pack and flip it into a must-have lifestyle accessory for the Gen Z crowd. We needed to ditch the tired, traditional music retail look and move toward a visual language that felt cool, immersive, and aspirational.

The Vision
The Cymbal as the Center of the Universe

To really hit home with a younger audience, I developed a concept that treated the cymbal as a celestial body, not just a piece of brass gear. We positioned the cymbal as a golden globe suspended in deep space.

It was a visual metaphor for the massive world of music the user was just starting to explore. I prioritized a high-gloss, hyper-detailed photography style. By leaning into dramatic rim lighting and deep shadows, we made these brass surfaces look premium and high-tech. The product became the undisputed hero of every frame.

Art Direction & Creative Execution

I led the full creative lifecycle, ensuring the space theme was consistent across every touchpoint:

Environmental Art Direction: I directed photoshoots that utilized dark, moody environments with neon accents to mimic a cosmic atmosphere, ensuring the product literally glowed within the marketing collateral.

Packaging as an Entry Point: The box design was architected to feel like a mission kit. I used a flood of deep space blacks and star field textures, making the unboxing experience feel like the start of an interstellar journey into drumming.

Digital Storytelling: I spearheaded a social-first campaign using short-form video that combined high-speed product rotations with rhythmic, modern soundtracks to stop the scroll of our Gen Z target.

The Planet Z launch fundamentally changed how Zildjian talks to beginners. Planet Z proved that entry-level doesn't have to mean low-design. By tapping into an atmospheric, Gen Z-friendly aesthetic, we turned a simple starter pack into a lifelong musical identity.
 

Lowering the Barrier
We made entry-level gear feel high-end, resulting in a significant uptick in starter kit sales.
 

Visual Shorthand
The cymbal as a globe imagery became a viral visual shorthand for the brand, successfully separating the starter pack from the more conservative professional lines.
 

Brand Affinity
By making the product feel sexy and premium from the start, we secured long-term loyalty within the Zildjian ecosystem from the very first purchase.
